As Aaron Hernandez moves through the deliberate legal system, one might have thought news around his case would cease for the time being.
On Sunday, a picture surfaced on Deadspin displaying two men that resemble Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey and Dolphins center Mike Pouncey donning "Free Hernandez" hats. It was later confirmed, by a league source, that the men in the photo were indeed the pair of NFL centers.
The Pouncey twins were both teammates of Hernandez at the University of Florida and won a BCS National Championship in their time at the school with the tight end. But their ties might go even further than that.
As Massachusetts authorities dug around for information regarding Hernandez, they came upon an unsolved 2007 shooting in Gainesville in which the then 17-year-old may have been involved. Well, both Mike and Maurkice's names have surfaced in that investigation as as well, as a source told police there that the Pouncey twins had been with Hernandez (and Reggie Nelson) in a Gainesville nightclub on the night of the shooting.
So, it probably was not wisest choice for the Pouncey brothers to so flagrantly show their support for Hernandez at this time.
For now, though, it can't be assumed that this was anything more than a silly decision on the part of two young, talented football players.
