Welker's wild intro to Twitter

Share

FOXBORO -- Wes Welker joined Twitter on Tuesday. By Tuesday night, he'd gotten a taste of the social medium's power. Welker, who was at nearly 83,000 followers Wednesday afternoon and had about 60,000 on Tuesday, tweeted that he would be at the Whole Foods Store in Bellingham, Mass promoting Bonk Breaker energy bars, an item he promotes. Who showed up? Everybody. The line was so long that, even after signing autographs and shaking hands for two hours, Welker didn't get to greet everyone who showed up. Some people weren't happy. And, people being people, they related their tales of woe. One woman tweeted at Welker that her nephew was devastated because they waited for two hours in the cold and didn't get an autograph. (Teachable moment? Sure! "Waaaahhhh, where's mine!!!!)To his credit, Welker tweeted that woman's whine and apologized. "I tried to sign as much stuff as I could for those people but it was just too many," said Welker who seemed sincerely sorry as I spoke to him Wednesday afternoon. "I try. We just weren't prepared for that many. I still gotta rest and still gotta study and still gotta prepare for Miami and do those things." Chad Ochocinco convinced Welker to get on Twitter. Judging from Welker's good-natured nut-busting with teammates and promotion of Bonk Breakers he got the feel for it pretty quickly. Welker said he doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. Anyone left out in the cold Tuesday should know that they'll still have a chance to see him around. "That's the hope. That's the plan."
