The injury bug has hit the Patriots, especially on defense.
With Aqib Talib and Jerod Mayo suffering injuries on Sunday, and Mayo now out for the season, the Patriots mind set of next man up will have to come into effect.
Paul Perillo discussed who must step up in the absence of Talib and Mayo on Patriots Football Weekly.
“The Aqib Talib [injury] is the one that stands out and I think it’s going to put a lot of pressure on Devin McCourty,” Perillo said. “He has been great back at safety. I think you are going to have to see him play a little bit more corner, be a little more versatile than he has been.”
Mayo is a huge loss for the Patriots, as the signal caller for the defense will miss the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle, leaving Dont’a Hightower to fill the void.
“I think [Hightower] has been very quiet,” Perillo said. “He’s the guy that has a lot of versatility. He can be used on every down. He can be used as a pass rusher, in pass coverage. He’s a good run stuffer. He’s a very physical player. But we haven’t really seen him do any of these things really effectively so far this season.”
