The Patriots covered themselves at the tight end position re-signing Michael Hoomanawanui to a two-year deal before he hit the free agent market.

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports was first with the news.

With a very lean crop of tight ends due to become free agents on Tuesday at 4 p.m., it’s a smart play for the Patriots to make sure a player like Hoomanawanui doesn’t get scooped up and leave New England their depth at the position compromised even more.
The 25-year-old who initially signed with the Patriots in September of 2012 and was a restricted free agent last year isn’t a game-changer. But he is a workmanlike player who has versatility.
Despite the fact he’s got just 17 catches in the past two seasons, he has excellent hands. He’s just not been a focal point at any time in the offense. The Patriots are still expected to dip into the tight end market during the draft.
