FOXBORO - Despite having the ammo to move up in the draft, the Patriots stayed put in the second round and selected linebacker Jamie Collins out of Southern Mississippi with the 52nd overall pick.

That was one of the picks acquired Thursday night in the deal with Minnesota. The Patriots’ next selection is No. 59.

Collins is a 6-4, 250-pounder who projects as a defensive end/outside linebacker. A three-year starter for Southern Mississippi, Collins had a massive year statistically in 2012, with 92 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.

Where does he fit? Well, it’s another weapon in the young linebacker corps to match with Dont'a Hightower, Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes and a complement, it seems, as an edge rusher with Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones.

He played three positions for Southern Miss and was a defensive back in 2009.  He has a 41.5 inch vertical and an 11-7 broad jump.

He was a three-year starter and was raised by his older sister after his parents and older brother passed away.
