The Patriots used their first of two seventh-round picks on Michael Buchanan from Illinois, a 6-5, 255-pound defensive end.
Buchanan, who can play end or linebacker, can stand to add a little size but the speed and length he can bring off the edge is impressive.
The Patriots now have a huge backlog of defensive end/linebacker guys. The starter in the defensive right end spot currently is Chandler Jones. Also in the mix, though, are Justin Francis, Jake Bequette (a third-rounder last year), Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham and Jason Vega.
So that’s a lot of people for the coaching staff to plow through to get to the best ones.
Buchanan had a DUI after the opener in 2011 and fractured his jaw in a fight in 2012. So he probably should get himself a nice XBox and a rumpus room.
