The Patriots have thrown another body into the mix at wide receiver.
Lavell Hawkins, a 26-year-old who had 71 catches in five seasons with the Titans, has agreed to a two-year deal with New England after being released by Tennessee last week, confirms.
According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennesseean, who first reported the signing, Hawkins also visited with the Texans and Giants before agreeing with New England.
The 5-11, 194-pounder had his best season in 2011 with 47 catches for 470 yards and the lone touchdown of his NFL career. Hawkins was a fourth-round pick out of Cal.
The Titans signed Hawkins to a three-year, $7.2 million deal that included a $2 million signing bonus last February. Part of the reason for their generosity, it was reported at the time, was Hawkins’ ability to play all three receiver positions and contribute on special teams coverage units.
But when Tennessee drafted Kendall Wright last April, Hawkins’ relevance was smushed in Tennessee.
Hawkins will now compete with fellow free agent signees Donald Jones and Michael Jenkins and whoever else the Patriots send over the ropes to join in the fray between now and training camp.
