The Patriots announced on Monday that they have signed offensive lineman RJ Mattes and and linebacker Taylor Reed to the practice squad. The team also released offensive lineman RJ Dill from the practice squad.
Mattes is already pretty familiar with Foxboro. He was signed as a rookie free agent out of North Carolina State, was released in May and re-signed soon thereafter in June. He spent training camp with the Patriots before being released on Aug. 24.
Mattes' signing gives the Patriots a little bit more depth on the offensive line, which has experienced its share of injuries of late. Nate Solder has dealt with the lingering effects of two concussions suffered earlier this month, and Logan Mankins injured his ankle on Sunday in New England's 34-20 win over Buffalo on Sunday though he missed just one offensive series.
Reed, a rookie free agent who was released off of the Cowboys practice squad on Nov. 26, helps the Patriots with their depth at the linebacker spot after Brandon Spikes left Sunday's game with a knee injury.
With two additions to the practice squad and one release, the Patriots have one empty slot on their practice squad. Defensive backs Justin Green and Kanorris Davis were both added to the 53-man roster off of the practice squad for Sunday's game.
