FOXBORO -- The Patriots released a pair of players off of their roster on Thursday, letting go of tight end DJ Williams and defensive tackle Marcus Forston.
No corresponding roster additions were announced by the team. The Patriots need to reduce their numbers from 87 players to 75 by Tuesday.
Releasing Williams further whittles down the depth the Patriots have at tight end. The players at that position now include Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, Steve Maneri and Justin Jones. Fullback James Develin has also helped the team deal with its lack of bodies at tight end.
Williams dealt with injuries throughout the spring and then suffered what appeared to be a lower-body injury during a joint practice with the Redskins on Aug. 5. He was not spotted at any training camp practices thereafter.
Forston has spent the majority of the last two seasons on the Patriots practice squad.
