The Patriots released reluctant guard Brian Waters on Tuesday.
So the career of a great offensive lineman will end with one short line on a transaction wire.
The former All-Pro joined the Patriots in September 2011 on a two-year deal and had a Pro Bowl season for the AFC Champions but decided he wanted a raise or a trade in 2012. He got neither and was put on the Reserve/Did Not Report list.
Trying to read the tea leaves on whether or not Waters would report became a side hobby during training camp -- there’s new Nike equipment in his locker! -- but in the end, the Patriots never budged, Waters never showed and New England didn’t really seem to miss him.
The 36-year-old Waters, a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro who spent all but the final season of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs spent 12 active seasons in the league. He was undrafted out of North Texas in 1999.
