It's not the big-name splash that will draw headlines and clicks during the NFL free agency period, but the Patriots re-signed a key component of their special teams unit on Friday.

The team re-signed long snapper Danny Aiken to a one-year deal. The move was first reported by ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss.

Aiken had a quiet 2013 -- exactly what every long snapper hopes for. He helped Stephen Gostkowski to one of the best seasons of any kicker in the league last year. He also aided punter Ryan Allen as Allen completed a strong rookie season.

Only one snap really got away from Aiken last year. In the Patriots Divisional Round game against the Colts, he sailed one over Allen's head, leading to an awkward play at the goal line during which the punter injured his shoulder.

Otherwise Aiken has been very solid in his spot at the center of New England's punting and kicking units since joining the team in 2011.
