The Patriots are said to be one of five teams interested in Browns utility man Joshua Cribbs.

Cribbs, 29, is a receiver/returner/running back/wildcat quarterback who would immediately be a replacement (and upgrade) for Julian Edelman who's said to be attracting interest from Cleveland.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer had the info on Cribbs and Edelman in the same report this afternoon.

Cribbs has been to two Pro Bowls as a special teamer but desires a bigger offensive role, said Cabot.

Cabot also noted earlier on Saturday that a league source expects the Browns to attempt to deal for Patriots backup Ryan Mallett. Another source told Cabot Patriots head coach Bill Belichick "won't part with him."

Speculation in the Boston Globe recently said the Patriots would want a second-round pick for Mallett, but given the fact he'll be a free agent at the end of 2014, the Patriots would likely be happy with as little as a fourth-round pick if they had a workable backup on their roster. Mallett and Mike Kafka are the only other quarterbacks on the roster behind Tom Brady.

In short, the Mallett stuff is very scattershot at this point and the free agent market and possibly the draft will likely have to settle out before Mallett becomes a trade target (if at all).
