The Patriots have traded a fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and a sixth-rounder.
Sopoaga is 32 years old and at 6-foot-2, 321 pounds will provide the Patriots some much-needed depth at defensive tackle.
After losing Vince Wilfork for the season to an Achilles injury and Tommy Kelly to a knee injury against the Bengals in Week 5, the Patriots have been forced to use two unheralded rookies -- sixth rounder Chris Jones and undrafted free agent Joe Vellano -- for the majority of snaps at defensive tackle.
Though both Jones and Vellano have played well in stretches, New England remained extremely thin at the position before trading for Sopoaga.
Spending the first eight years of his nine-year career with the 49ers, Sopoaga has 7.5 career sacks in 132 career games and 87 career starts. He has been a dependable player health wise over the course of his career, missing just four games in nine years.
He has started all but one game for the Eagles this season and has seven tackles and three assists.
More to come . . .
