FOXBORO -- Noticed the upswing in the number of beards found throughout New England over the last few months? As the Red Sox made their run to a World Series title -- completed last night with a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals in Game 6 -- facial follicles have sprouted up in droves.
Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich made it very clear on Thursday, however, that his tightly-cropped black bristles are not of the bandwagon variety.
"I've been doing this for a couple years by now, guys," Ninkovich told media members. "This isn't the Boston Red Sox beard right here. This is just the Ninko beard. I've been doing this for, like, three years. We'll see how many of those guy shave them off because they're not . . . I'm sure [Jacoby] Ellsbury's taking his off."
When Ninkovich finished joking about his dedication to his own personal trademark fuzz, he heaped congratulations on the Red Sox for their worst-to-first campaign.
"Congrats to those guys," he said. "When you're a little kid, you're thinking about playing in the Super Bowl or the World Series. You get to that point and you win it, it's gotta be pretty special. I'm still trying to get to my win in the Super Bowl."
