Hard to say that the Bills have made any strides at all this offseason. They’ve only brought aboard two players -- Kevin Kolb (aka Fitz 2.0) and Manny Lawson. The losses of offensive guards Andy Levitre and valued depth guy Chad Rinehart leave dents. Their plan for wide receiver is still murky. Stevie Johnson may move inside to the slot but that opens a hole outside. If Johnson stays outside, there’s a need for a slot. Tight end Scott Chandler’s blown ACL won’t be healed in time for the start of the season, most likely. And, while both safety George Wilson and linebacker Nick Barnett are on the downside, they were the Bills leading tacklers in 2012 and are either gone (Wilson to Tennessee) or still unsigned (Barnett). The retention of safety Jairus Byrd with the franchise tag was a smart move. He’s just coming into the prime of his career and is a Pro Bowl player that’s been lassoed for a reasonable price. The Bills have the eighth overall pick and, while they’ve been open about the need for a quarterback, this may not be the year to draft one early out of desperation. Shoring up one of those more immediate need spots and letting Kolb show his wares for a year might be a better option. Also, new head coach Doug Marrone could be interested in bringing aboard his quarterback at Syracuse Ryan Nassib, and Nassib could be had later in the draft.
