Julian Edelman is showing this season that he can fill in just find in the slot after the departure of Wes Welker.

Edelman is having a career season with 70 receptions, fifth best in the NFL, for 711 yards and four touchdowns.

Tom E. Curran on Quick Slants called Edelman’s season bittersweet since all of his production is coming at the veteran minimum salary.

“It’s bitter because he doing it for a veteran minimum salary of $715,000,” Curran said. “That’s the salary Edelman took when no other team wanted him as a free agent. So after playing four years at $450K per, he got no payoff as a free agent. And he may be bound to the same fate after this season when his deal is up again.”

Edelman has outperformed Danny Amendola this season, who signed a five-year, $31 million contract in the offseason with the Patriots.

“Injuries or no, Edelman is bringing twice the production for one-fifth the cost,” Curran said. “And the Patriots love value. That’s not good value in terms of Amendola. We’re not even talking about what Edelman brings as a punt returner.”
