The Patriots and Vince Wilfork have had a great relationship over the years.
Wilfork won a Super Bowl with the team in his rookie season, and has turned into one of the premiere nose tackles in the NFL since then.
He also rode out his rookie deal until the end, and then cashed in on a nice new deal from the Patriots. But now, it appears that the Patriots don't want to pay him all that money, and whatever restructure they came to him with, he didn't like.
Wilfork has reportedly asked for his release from the team, ending his tenure with the only team he knows.
"Right now it seems like he’s gone," says Kirk Minihane on Arbella Early Edition. "It seems like he’s going to be released."
The question is, what kind of market does Wilfork expect to find? While there will certainly be some interest in a proven veteran like Wilfork, teams won't exactly be breaking down the door to offer a blank check to a 32-year-old who is coming off a ruptured Achilles.
Wilfork is reportedly on vacation, and the Patriots aren't in any rush to cut ties with him - they haven't yet.
