CRANSTON, RI -- Patriots safety Devin McCourty was at Arlington Elementary Monday to promote literacy at an assembly of 250 students. After reading a couple of stories and answering some questions from students, McCourty broke to meet with local reporters.

The surgery performed on his right shoulder this offseason came up early in the conversation.

"It's going pretty good," McCourty said. "Just rehabbing day-by-day and taking it one step at a time. It's a process I'm learning and I'm just going through it and listening to the trainers."

The New Jersey native noted he's stayed close by Foxboro through the recovery process. New England's offseason program begins April 15. The first block of organized team activities commence May 20, whether McCourty is ready or not.

But he can still get involved.

"[By] being in the locker room. You'd be surprised how much chemistry and everything is built, just hanging out in the locker room and going out to eat and things like that. Even with us all on the field, we still have to do a lot of things off the field to get that chemistry and that trust and really intact to go out there and play winning football.

"I think we have a good group of guys and I can't wait until that process starts."
