The New England Patriots were poised to get the ball back in overtime after Jet’s kicker Nick Folk missed a 56-yard field goal, but a penalty changed all of that and left the Patriots stunned and confused.
On the missed field goal, Patriot’s defensive tackle Chris Jones was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty for pushing a teammate into the Jets line, giving the Jets a first down, and a few plays later the win when Folk hit a 42-yard field goal for a 30-27 victory.
Logan Mankins joined Michael Felger on PostGame live to discuss the bizarre ending to the game.
“That was a tough one,” Mankins said. “It was great to see him miss it until you saw that flag on the ground. Hugely disappointing. I’m still not exactly sure what happened, so I’m going to have to wait to hear that one.”
To try to make the game safer, pushing a teammate into the opponent’s offensive line during a field goal attempt became a penalty this year.
“I’m aware of the rule, they just change that this year,” Mankins said. “I guess if they saw that they saw that. Kind of ticky-tacky for the game-winning play there. It is what it is. They called it and it really hurt us.”
