Robert Kraft insists he wanted the Patriots to hold on to Wes Welker.

This morning in Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column, King speaks with Robert Kraft about the details and motivations behind Tom Brady’s historic new deal.

“This is a real deal,” Kraft said to those questioning the sanctity and finality of Brady’s restructuring. ”Look at our track record. We don't do fake deals. The contract we have with Tom Brady is a real contract we will both live by.”

(Editor's note: Ahem!)

Later in the interview, Kraft continues to make no attempt at hiding his contempt for those around the league and in the media who have sounded off against the deal: “These people don't know the relationship between Tommy and this team. Maybe they hate the Patriots, or they're jealous.”

This morning on CSNNE, Tom E. Curran highlighted some of more interesting quotes from the Kraft conversation — mainly, the above two — and added perspective on what the hell Kraft is thinking. Or more, on the potential fall out from the owner’s emotional and somewhat defensive words.

Curran writes: “Kraft has now walked out on the limb and stated categorically that there will be no renegotiation.

To me, that's a helluva corner Brady's been backed into with this public declaration.”

And I agree.

I really don’t see what Kraft had to gain with his approach here.

Since when do the Patriots care about what people think? Since when have they felt the need to explain anything they do? Since when do they respond to the haters?

And either way, why respond like that? Why accuse the critics of being jealous? Why give the haters more reasons to hate? And like Mr. E. Curran said, why rule out possibility of a later restructuring? Why limit the options? Why open yourself up to more unnecessary criticism? Why? Why? Why?

Well, because he’s the owner. That’s why. Because Robert Kraft can do and say whatever he wants. It’s his team. It’s his name. He has a right to take things personally.

But he didn’t do Brady, Bill Belichick, the organization or its fans any favors here. If anything, he only increased the likelihood that more haters are on the way.

Hopefully next time he’ll take a page from coach and just ignore the noise.
