The news of Brandon Spikes' placement on IR was a bit of a surprise to everybody who follows the team.
There were no reports prior to the Patriots announcement, and while it was known that Spikes was dealing with knee issues, it wasn't known how serious they were.
Patriots president/owner Jonathan Kraft joined Gary Tanguay and Kirk Minihane on the debut of Early Edition, where he was asked if teams are trained to simply move on after an injury like that.
"You obviously feel for Brandon, but in terms of the team and mentality, I think yes," Kraft said, "I think in the locker room, not just this year but any year you understand it's part of the game when you get to this part of the season."
The Patriots can go on without Spikes. But can they go on with Tom Brady or Bill Belichick? Someday, they'll have to. Kraft said they are prepared for that day.
"I think it's safe to assume that when we talked in private, that there is a plan," Kraft said.
The hope for everybody is that day is far, far away.
