FOXBORO -- Rex Ryan's defense added a thumper to the back end when the Jets selected Louisville safety Calvin Pryor with the No. 18 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
At 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds, Pryor brings good size and strength to back end of New York's 'D'. He's recognized as a violent hitter with good ball skills. He's versatile enough to play in the box and help defend the run, but he's fast enough (ran a 4.62 40-yard dashCombine) to handle traditional free-safety responsibilities.
The Jets added to their secondary with their first pick in last year's draft when they selected corner Dee Milliner out of Alabama with the No. 9 overall pick. Milliner disappointed with his performance as a rookie, but if Pryor can fill in immediately, the Jets will have a young and athletic secondary better built to handle passing attacks in the AFC East.
