Jerod Mayo - a weekly guest on Quick Slants - tore his pectoral muscle a couple weeks ago, and had surgery on it that put him on IR, ending his season.

But he was kind enough to join Tom E. Curran for another episode, and even kinder to meet a whole bunch of Patriots fans who attended the event.

Curran asked Mayo about the moment he heard the news on the injury.

"It was rough, but I knew the news before they told me the news," Mayo said. "It's kind of one of those things where you kind of just know."

So with Mayo out for the season, does that mean he's away from the team? Nope.

"I'm taking this time and I'm breaking down film," Mayo said. "I'm trying to give these guys tips that I see from film, and just try to pass along the things that I see and hopefully [they] go out there and execute."

With the Patriots on a bye week, Bill Belichick gave his guys some time off. Mayo isn't worried that anybody will get into trouble.

"Obviously you don't want anybody doing any dumb things," he said. "I think this team is very mature. Even though we're young, the guys really know the Patriot way. And everyone is trying to do the right thing and that's all you can ask for. We're all one mistake away."
