FOXBORO -- Aaron Hernandez had the most accidentally apt quote of the day on Tuesday when he said of Tim Tebow, “There’s a reason why he’s here. I actually don’t know the reason yet, but we’ll see.”
Hernandez, a former teammate of Tebow’s at the University of Florida, is working back from shoulder surgery that could keep him down into training camp.
Gauging the recovery progress of one of the NFL’s most versatile weapons would normally have carried the day at minicamp, but Tuesday wasn’t an ordinary day with Tebow in town.
Still, we squeezed a few health questions in before the Tebow train blew through the interview.
“Shoulder’s doing great,” said Hernandez. “Better and better each day. Feeling good. Taking it day-by-day and hopefully by (the start of training camp) I’m ready. At the end of the day, you want to be healthy for the season. You don’t want to overdo it now and have it hurt you for the season.”
Hernandez was unmistakably happy to have Tebow in town.
“We were real close in college,” Hernandez explained. “It’s good to be back out here with him. He’s a great player and I’m glad to play with him . . . He’s a football player. He knows how to make plays and I’m glad he’s on my team again.”
Asked what he figures the Patriots have planned for Tebow, Hernandez said, “I’m sure he’ll be doing a few things here. That will be up to Bill Belichick.”
And the attendant hype that accompanies Tebow?
“We don’t think nothing of it,” he insisted. “The media’s always around whether it’s one or 20 of them. You just answer the questions and keep moving.”
