The Patriots have had their share of running backs who can catch over the past few years. There was Danny Woodhead. There was Steven Jackson. There was Kevin Faulk.
Now, Shane Vereen can be the next one.
Vereen caught eight passes for 149 yards last season, but Andy Hart from Patriots Football Weekly says Vereen will have an increased role this year.
"If he can stay healthy, I really believe he can be a dynamic playmaker on this offense," Hart said on "UNO Sports Tonight."
Vereen played 13 games last season and only five the year before, but his highlight catch was an 83-yard touchdown catch. Hart said Vereen has the ability to beat safeties and linebackers for balls in the open field. Gary Tanguay even said Vereen has potential to catch for 500 yards this season, given the Patriots' weapons.
"I think Vereen can make more big plays," Hart said.
Vereen could draw comparisons to Faulk based on their athleticism and dynamic playmaking ability.
"If Shane Vereen can be anything like Kevin Faulk, that'll be a boost to the offense," Hart said.
With New England searching for players to replace Woodhead, Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Lloyd, it isn't out of the question to think Vereen could be one of them.
"They're in a search for weapons," Hart said. "He can be one of them."
