FOXBORO -- Rob Gronkowski will not play in tonight's preseason game with the Eagles, according to a report from NFL Network's Albert Breer.
Gronkowski continues to slowly-but-surely recover from a season-ending ACL injury last fall. His latest milestone came when he began to take some 11-on-11 reps in practice this week, but it appears as though the Patriots want to keep their game-changing tight end on the sidelines for now.
About two and a half hours before Friday night's 7:30 p.m. kickoff a number of Patriots, including Gronkowski, participated in some brief conditioning work on the game turf. Linebacker Jerod Mayo, offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, defensive tackles Sealver Siliga and Dominique Easley, center Bryan Stork and receiver Aaron Dobson also participated in the workout that lasted about five minutes.
When the Patriots came out for their full team warmup Gronkowski, Dobson, Siliga, Vollmer, Stork, Chris Jones, Michael Hoomanawanui, Cameron Gordon, Chris Martin and Tyler Gaffney were not on the field.
Bill Belichick told 98.5 The Sports Hub before the game that Mayo would be a game-time decision.
Corner Alfonzo Dennard, rookie wideout Jeremy Gallon and defensive tackles Jerel Worthy and Ben Bass are dressed and appear set to make their preseason debuts for the Patriots. We'll see how many snaps those players receive.
