Rob Gronkowski was targeted 17 times in his first game of the season Sunday in New York. He finished the day with eight receptions for 114 yards and no touchdowns.

In a conference call on Monday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick talked about Gronkowski's return and the way they handled his playing time.

"I think Rob did some good things," said Belichick. "Obviously he hasn't played in a while. I'm sure that with more playing time and practice time that he'll improve. But I thought he competed well and he definitely made some plays.

"He was in the game in certain personnel groups and wasn’t in the game in other groups," added Belichick. "That was one way to manage it. Then just on the sideline watching how he was doing and talking to him, I think we got a sense of what the amount or level of plays were going to be for him as the game went down. I’d say a combination of those two things."
