FOXBORO -- The Patriots stayed pretty close to the line of scrimmage with their first seven selections in the 2014 draft.
In the sixth round, they moved a little further away, selecting defensive back Jemea Thomas from Georgia Tech with the 206th pick.
Thomas isn’t big. He’s 5-foot-9, 192 pounds. But he’s described as an excellent competitor that’s both mentally and physically tough. Thomas toggled back and forth between corner and safety in 2012 and in 2013 he led Georgia Tech with 88 tackles.
He’s versatile, playing every position in the secondary. He also has punt return experience and tied the Georgia Tech record with 54 games played.
A player of Thomas’ size probably won’t play on the outside but he could be a Marquice Cole-type specializing on special teams and as a depth slot corner.
