Mary Paoletti will be previewing each Patriots position up until the start of camp in her daily "Roster Reset". Yesterday, she previewed the guards. Today, she takes a look at fullbacks. Check in tomorrow to see her preview on the running backs.
James Develin - 1st season
Ben Bartholomew - Rookie
News of note: Remember when the Patriots had a glut of fullbacks under contract? It wasn't that long ago; Lousaka Polite, Spencer Larsen, Eric Kettani, and Tony Fiammetta were all on board before April of 2012.
Fun while it lasted.
Polite was the first gone, cut just hours after Fiammetta signed. Larsen was placed on injured reserve at the end of training camp. Kettani made it to the practice squad, but was released September 4. Fiammetta was the only fullback to make it through the year, though designated to the left squad before the regular season started.
What have we learned? The Patriots probably won't grant this position a roster spot. Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui did some blocking last year and Aaron Hernandez also took few fullback snaps. Hernandez no longer an option isn't a big deal. The point is, New England's up-tempo offense can make do without a pure fullback on the game day roster.
But who knows? Develin did carve out a spot on the practice squad, and was even promoted to play one Sunday last year.
