The urgency to perform never left Julian Edelman in his first five seasons with the Patriots.

On a conference call Thursday afternoon, the Patriots wideout - who agreed to a new deal with the team over the weekend - said that, "I always felt like if I had a bad practice I could be cut the next day."

The Patriots have taken care of the former seventh-round pick with a four-year deal that could pay him as much as $19M. Edelman - like Wes Welker a year ago - didn't find a lot of suitors on the open market.

He did take a trip to San Francisco to visit his hometown 49ers (he termed the visit "surreal"), but it sounds as if he really didn't want to be anywhere else.

Tom Brady, while imploring Edelman to do right by himself financially, expressed his desire to have Edelman back. For his part, Edelman said, "I couldn't leave my guy. That's my dog."
