Patrick Chung, whose play dropped precipitously for the Patriots in 2012, was signed by the Eagles on Tuesday.

The 34th overall pick in the 2009 draft (used with the pick the Patriots acquired in exchange for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel), Chung showed great promise early in his career as both an explosive hitter and savvy contributor.

In 2010, he was at the epicenter of a blown fake punt that harpooned the Patriots chances in a playoff game against the Jets. In 2011, he was playing well before getting hurt against the Giants in the regular season. He returned to play very well in the Super Bowl in February 2012.

He seemed poised for a solid 2012 but his game unspooled in a collection of overaggressive reads, out-of-control coverages and over-the-top hits. Blown coverages in Buffalo and Seattle cost the Patriots points and, after a shoulder injury, Chung fell into disuse.

The Patriots are high on the potential of Tavon Wilson, a second-rounder in 2012. He'll start the season next to Devin McCourty at the safety spot.
