Part of Miami’s pregame inspiration Sunday was provided by Pat Riley’s father.

Apparently, Lee Riley, Pat’s father, once told Pat, “Every now and then, somewhere, some place, sometimes, you are going to have to plant your feet and stand firm and make a point about what you are and what you believe in. When that time comes, Pat, you simply have to do it.”

The quote was in Riley’s book The Winner Within and Dolphins players were given a copy of the quote prior to the game, according to the Miami Herald.

Riley had mixed success when sharing it. The Lakers beat the Celtics in Game 2 of the 1987 NBA Finals against the Celtics. The Knicks lost to Houston in Game 6 of the 1994 NBA Finals after the quote was dredged up.

It’s not known whether the quote was passed on to Dolphins coach Joe Philbin by Riley himself or whether Philbin acted alone.

Keeping in the spirit, a Red Auerbach quote for this Monday morning after: “Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."
