Alfonzo Dennard acknowledged Monday that he violated probation in July when he consumed alcohol hours prior to being arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Dennard, appearing in a Lincoln, Nebraska courtroom for a probation violation hearing, said he drank two beers around 9 p.m. on July 11 then drove his girlfriend’s car about 4.5 hours later, according to reporter Jonathan Edwards of the Lincoln Journal Star who was in the courtroom Monday.

Edwards noted that Dennard only mentioned the drinking after being prodded by his attorney.

The judge ordered a further investigation into Dennard’s behavior and a sentencing on the probation violation has been scheduled for December 5. Dennard is in court to face the DUI charge on October 8.

Prosecutors alleged Monday that Dennard -- despite not completing the breathalyzer test to their satisfaction -- blew a .107 and a .153 in two partial samples.

Monday’s hearing was held to determine whether Dennard violated probation he was given in April when he was convicted of assaulting a Lincoln police officer. That conviction carried a 30-day jail term that Dennard was to serve in March 2014, provided he stayed out of trouble.

Meanwhile, Dennard’s judgment is becoming pretty hard to understand. Thursday night, in the fracas between the Jets and Patriots, Dennard twice fired sucker punches at Jets players and was one of the few individuals doing more than just shoving and jostling.

Given the fact he’s already under league scrutiny for his off-field conduct, Dennard did himself no favors Thursday night. Whatever the Nebraska legal system decides, Dennard’s name is crossing the desk of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell too often to be sure there won’t be league discipline forthcoming.
