Stephen Gostkowski could prove to be a difference-maker in the postseason.

To win in the playoffs, the New England Patriots will have to perform well in all three facets of the game.

And while much of the focus will be on the Patriots’ offense and defense, it will be the play of the special teams that could prolong their postseason run.

Tom E. Curran on Quick Slants discussed the Patriots special teams and its importance come playoff time.

“We can talk playoff matchups all we want,” Curran said. “How will the Patriots stop offense X? How will they deal with defense Y? But what it will come down to in the playoffs, I guarantee you, will be the kicking game. And this year, the Patriots are outstanding on special teams.”

The Patriots have seen special teams lead them to Super Bowl victories before, courtesy of Adam Vinatieri. And this year, the stage might be set for Stephen Gostkowski to provide similar heroics, as Gostkowski is coming off a regular season in which he made 38-of-41 field goals.

“Whatever happens in the postseason, however long the Patriots last, the kicking game will be the deciding factor,” Curran said.
