The reason the Patriots will play in the Super Bowl is not what you would think.

According to Tom E. Curran, it will be the Patriots secondary that gives them the best chance of going to the Super Bowl this year. Curran explained his case on Quick Slants.

“Think about it, the Patriots secondary is the best part of their defense right now and it’s the most complete part,” Curran said. “You don’t get far without a good safety. They’ve got that with McCourty and they have a very able one with Steve Gregory, despite what you think. They have a shutdown corner who has had the ability to get better over the last couple of weeks in Aqib Talib. They have a slot corner, Kyle Arrington, who absolutely disrupted Wes Welker the first time around when they saw Denver.”

Whether their secondary is good enough to win a Super Bowl is another story, but it could be one of the main reasons they are there in the first place.

“I’m not telling you the Patriots are going to be able to waltz into New York and knock off Seattle or San Francisco or even Carolina because of those teams’ running games,” Curran said. “But both the Colts and the Broncos are carried by their quarterbacks and if you can disrupt them and take the ball away from them, you can win the football game.”
