Cards GM says Pats didn’t reach out on Fitzgerald

At the Super Bowl a few weeks back, a knowledgeable source told me the Patriots mulled the notion of dealing for Larry Fitzgerald last offseason and that informal inquiries were made.

The news wasn’t that the Patriots had been on the precipice of acquiring Fitz. It was that -- after years of rumored/wished for interest -- I’d heard from someone I trusted that the interest wasn’t merely rumored. It actually existed.

It never rose to the level of conversations between the teams, though, and that’s why it’s no surprise that Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim said Thursday at the NFL Combine that when he heard our report, “I was trying to find someone to fire. Because they never called me.”

The Cardinals ultimately restructured Fitzgerald’s contract, dropping his 2014 cap number to a more reasonable level.

Of course, his cap number for 2015 is now a cool $23.6 million so let’s just say . . . stay tuned.
