Brady: Can't ride ups and downs of wins, losses

FOXBORO -- The hosannas after knocking off the unbeaten Saints turned into hellsamattawithyous after Sunday’s loss to the Jets.

Tom Brady maintains he didn’t pay attention to either.

“You have a lot of confidence every week that, as a player, you’re gonna get the job done,” said Brady. “I think it’s important not to ride the ups and downs of the season and the emotions of 'We won, we lost, everyone tells you you’re great, everyone tells you you suck.' If you do you’ll have a hard time. You just try to believe in the process, believe that what you’re doing is the right way to prepare.”

In the wake of the loss to New York, Brady was asked if that meant spending more or less time working on tweaking routines.

“Around here? It’s usually more work,” said Brady. “It’s just part of the process. You don’t do less, I know that. We’re 5-2, we’re at a decent place. We’re a long ways from the end of the season and based on what we’ve done so far, there’s a lot of room for improvement. Imagine if we make the improvement.”

That last part, Brady urging contemplation of how good the Patriots may still become is proof that he’s a long way from putting head in hands and resigning himself to his offense being a shell of its former self.

“The law of large numbers is you’re not goona win ‘em all but you gotta believe in what you’re doing,” said Brady. “If you do that, you’re have a chance to get a good outcome. …Understand there are some days, you’re gonna get a little less than you deserve some days and some days you’ll get a little more than you deserve. That’s just the way it is in sports.”

Why can the offense work one week but backslide? Why is the execution still in progress?

“We’re trying to figure those things out too and figure out where we’re at and what we need to do better,” Brady answered patiently. “Some weeks you think you have the solution and you go out and it works. Other weeks you go out and it doesn’t work and you have to re-evaluate. If we won this last game by 50 points, it wouldn’t matter for this next game. You have to stay level-headed about where we’re at and where we’re headed.”
