FOXBORO -- The Bills took a pass on the quarterback most thought would be the first one selected (Geno Smith), took another pass on the quarterback the head coach knew best (Ryan Nassib), and made E.J. Manuel their quarterback for the future.

Manuel, a 6-foot-5, 237-pound, strong-armed and athletic player from Florida State becomes the man the Bills will now turn to as they try to dig out of the nether reaches of the AFC East.

Smith, the West Virginia quarterback who caused divided opinions, remains on the board as does Nassib, the quarterback at Syracuse for current Bills’ coach Doug Marrone.

Tarvaris Jackson is the leading candidate for the job in Buffalo right now. But Manuel immediately becomes the future for the Bills.
