PHOENIX -- A number of irons remain in the fire for the Patriots as we are now nearly a week into the 2013 league year.

Tuesday morning, Bill Belichick was predictably tight-lipped about the team's pending free agents like right tackle Sebastian Vollmer.

"Well, there are a number of players out there both on our team and other teams that are unsigned," said Belichick. "We’re in conversations with some of them. And there are other guys we’ll be in conversations with that we aren’t now. So we’ll see how the whole process works itself out. We’ll take it day by day."

Speaking generally, Belichick said this free agent period is working out similarly to how he anticipated.

"I’d say it’s about the same," he said. "First few days, certain things get settled. The next couple days, there’s still a filtering process, a little musical chairs, where one guy ends up here, and other dominoes somewhere else, and another second wave of free agency. That’ll last a little while. Then there’s another wave of free agency after the draft. It’ll die down probably 2-3 weeks prior to the draft. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see another flurry of activity in the next week to 10 days. Somewhere in there."

Does he expect the Patriots to be in active in that flurry perhaps with guys like RFA wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders or defensive end John Abraham?

"I don’t know. My crystal ball is as cloudy now as it usually is," Belichick answered. "We’ll see how it goes. I don’t know. We’ll monitor the situation. If there’s an opportunity we feel good about, we’ll act on it. It always takes two parties.’’
