FOXBORO -- When an NFL assistant is in the running to take over the head-coaching position for another franchise, the story is normally viewed from the perspective of said coach and said new franchise.
In a distant third comes the storyline of, "What the heck happens to the job this guy left behind?"
On Wednesday Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels reportedly removed his name from consideration for the Browns open head coach position, meaning that, for the near future at least, the Patriots will retain one of the most well-respected offensive coordinators in the NFL.
Both Danny Amendola and LeGarrette Blount said on Thursday that the team did not discuss McDaniels' on-again, off-again head-coaching candidacy in Cleveland.
Amendola did admit that he was excited to continue to play for McDaniels.
"Josh is a great coach," Amendola said. "He gets his players really amped up and they play really hard for him. I'm really glad I got to play with him before I came here, and really excited to play with him here. He's a great coach."
Amendola played for the St. Louis Rams in 2011 when McDaniels was hired there as offensive coordinator, but the wideout's season ended after one game due to injury.
One might imagine that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is happy he won't be losing his offensive coordinator to the Browns anytime soon. For seven of the last 10 seasons, the two worked together with McDaniels serving as quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator.
Brady sang McDaniels' praises just before the New Year on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan Show.
"Josh is the best offensive coach I could ever imagine," Brady said. "He’s so prepared, he’s so confident in what he does. He figures out a way every week to get us in the best position as players to win. I have so much respect for him and what he does for me, what he does for our team. He’s just a great coach. He’s got a lot of poise, got a lot of discipline. I hope he doesn’t go anywhere. I mean, I’d love for him to coach me the rest of my life. But that’s just the way it is. He’s one of my best friends, and I love having him.”
