INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Randy Moss had a modest season in his NFL comeback. After "retiring" for one year, the receiver returned to catch 28 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games with the 49ers.

San Francisco GM Trent Baalke praised Moss Thursday at the scouting combine.

"Randy's a pro. I can't say enough good things about Randy, and I think if you ask anyone in our organization they would say the same thing. One of the first guys to work every day, one of the last to leave. A guy that takes great body, that is probably one of the smartest football players, if not the smartest football player I've been around. He grasped the offense very quickly and was a real leader in that group, in that room."

Was Baalke trying to smooth his receiver's feathers?

Last season's numbers aren't what Moss is used to. The 36-year old had over 1,000 yards receiving in 10 of his 14 career seasons. Despite standing on the Super Bowl's doorstep this February, Moss didn't hide his disdain for the lack of targets.

"I don't like my role," he admitted on media day. "I really don't."

Moss might be the uncommon NFL veteran who covets catches more than championships. Moss has seven Pro Bowl selections, five All-Pro nods, and a list of touchdown and receiving records. Yet it doesn't sound like a Lombardi Trophy is the thing to satisfy him.

It might be difficult for San Francisco, or any team, to get the free agent enough catches to make him happy.

Perhaps that's why Baalke gave his enthusiasm an intriguing endcap.

"We're certainly happy that he was there. Is he going to return this year? I don't know that yet."
