Rivers not ready to commit to next season

BOSTON —- You can point to a number of reasons why the Celtics have been competitive over the last six years.

Guys like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are certainly two of them. A strong supporting cast always helps. And don't forget the fans - they're loud in Boston.

But none of those things happen without the guy calling the shots from the sideline.

Doc Rivers.

Unlike most teams in the NBA, the Celtics have a coach in Rivers that players really look up to and want to play for. Rivers is a huge part of the Celtics, and the Celtics are a huge part of him.

But like some of his star players, there's no telling for sure what Rivers' future with the team holds. He's obviously wanted by the entire organization, but even Rivers was hesitant to talk about the future Friday night after the Knicks eliminated his team from the playoffs.

“I don’t know, I mean, I don’t know that right now," he said. "I can’t make that decision now. I’m under contract. And we’ll see, I mean, honestly, I just can’t even think about that right now. So I don’t know.”

Despite the uncertainty, it would be quite a shock if Rivers didn't return to the Celtics as head coach. If there's any shot at Garnett returning, Rivers will have to be the head coach. But Garnett retiring - and then Pierce leaving - doesn't necessarily mean Rivers goes with them, as some have speculated in the past.

It's more likely that Rivers doesn't want to think about next season minutes after this season had been finished. But he will take some time and clear his mind.

“Yeah.  I do [think about it] every year. I do every year," he said. "You know, it’s not anything, I’m not leaning that way of not coming back, I can tell you that. If I told you right now, I’m coming back. But like I just said, I immerse myself and I need to just detox, and we’ll find that out.”
