It's funny how some things work out.

Brad Stevens is now the Celtics head coach, taking over for Doc Rivers, who left for the Clippers.

But did you know that Rivers and Stevens had talked about another coaching vacancy recently, while Rivers was still with the Celtics? That's what Rivers told USA Today:

"I'm a big Stevens fan, have always been," Rivers said. "It's funny, I talked to him about a month ago about another (NBA head coaching) job where somebody else was thinking about hiring him and the GM from there called me to talk to Brad to get a feel if he wanted to coach in the NBA."

Rivers wouldn't say which team it was, but the fact that other NBA teams had interest in Stevens proves that it may not have been much of a surprise hire within the NBA world. It's also pretty crazy to think that Rivers was gauging Stevens' interest in an NBA head coaching job that ended up being the one he was holding at the time of the conversation.

"And then the way it works out," Rivers said, "four weeks later, he takes my job (laughs). It's funny. I told him that he'd be an excellent NBA coach, and he's ready for it. Whether you want to leave Butler or not, now that's up to you. I said that's a personal situation, and it's funny because I told him, I said, 'I'm going through that right now, and I don't know what I'm going to do.' Maybe the fact he saw me leave, he thinks, 'Well (expletive), I'm leaving too.'"
