Inez Ritch, Reggie Lewis' mother, remembers her son's will to play basketball and what he was like during an extended interview for "Remember Reggie," a 90-minute special that first aired at 8 p.m. Sunday on CSNNE, which took a look at the life of former Boston Celtic Reggie Lewis 20 years after his death..
To her, "It really hit home when he called me and told me he was drafted," she said on Lewis' emergence in the NBA.
But Lewis, who had all the potential in the world, died before his career could take off. He died of heart problems when he collapsed during an offseason practice in July 1993. When he passed away at the age of 27, the people of Boston took the opportunity to honor him as much as they could.
"To see all the people and all the respect that was given to him," Ritch said, "it was really, truly amazing. Then you pinch yourself and say, 'That was my son. That was Reggie.' He was truly blessed.'"
