The New England media had a special bond with Reggie Lewis. A charming, charismatic figure, broadcasters and writers Jackie MacMullan, Bob Ryan, Tommy Heinsohn, Mike Gorman, and Bob Neumeier got to know the 6-foot-7 kid from Baltimore between his four years at Northeastern and six seasons with the Celtics.
“He was the kind of person that when you saw him, your first instinct was to smile,” said MacMullan, “because there was nothing negative about him.”
MacMullan remembers July 27, 1993, the day Lewis collapsed and died shooting at Brandeis University. She calls the tragedy ‘the worst story she’s ever covered’.
“I still can’t believe it,” said MacMullan on Lewis’s death. “To this day I can’t believe it. It was one of the saddest days of my professional life.”
