Popeye Jones' son: Future NHL star?

Share

With all the depression surrounding the Sox, I think we need a change of pace. And nothing says change of pace like a story about Popeye Jones son.

You may remember Popeye from his brief stint with the Celtics, or his years as a well-traveled but serviceable rebounder, or his numerous coaching jobs around the league or his role as captain of the NBAs all-time All-Ugly team. (Dale Ellis, Gheorghe Muresan, Jeff Hornacek and Sam Cassell round out the starting five).

But I bet you didnt know that Jones son is currently one of the best hockey prospects in the entire world. (I didnt either, until I read about it this morning on Ben Rohrbachs tumblr.)

Seth Jones is a projected top-three pick in next years NHL Entry Draft and the 17-year-old is USA Hockeys top rated underage prospect. Hes also the son of a well-traveled NBA player and coach.

I guess when you sit back and think about it, it is odd for a professional basketball players son to play hockey at such a high level, Popeye Jones said in a phone interview with CSNWashington.com.

Honestly though, who knew?

And what more can I possibly say?

Popeye Jones son is going to be one of the Top 3 picks in next years NHL draft. Up is down. Left is right. Red Sox are likable team! OK, thats going too far, but what the hell is going on?

I dont know, but I love it. Personally, I hope this is the start of a new trend in former athletes children finding success in unlikely sports.

Maybe well hear about Brian Daubachs son earning a scholarship to play running back at USC? Or maybe Ted Washingtons son will become a world class ping pong player? Or how about: With the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select . . . Matt Stairs Jr.!

OK, that's it from me for today. And this week (I'm off tomorrow).

Everyone have a safe weekend and enjoy some hardcore baseball.

Sox vs. Royals: It doesn't get any better.
