Jason Collins has done what no other current athlete in the four major sports has ever done: He came out.

Collins is gay, and he's no longer hiding it, after announcing it in this week's edition of Sports Illustrated.

The Boston Herald's Steve Buckley is also gay, and came out himself a couple of years ago. He joins CSNNE's Kyle Draper to discuss Collins' coming out and what it could mean for other gay athletes going forward.

"I think there are lots of athletes nearly in the on-deck circle this very moment who are mulling the opportunity, mulling the possibility of coming out, they've provably already talked about it with their family, with their agent, and so forth," Buckley said. "And what will happen now is that they will stand and watch and see what happens, see the fallout, read the articles, watch the different shows. Then I think it becomes the snowball rolling down the hill. I expect to see a lot of gay athletes over the next couple of years."

Collins has received an outpouring of support from people all over the world, including many, many athletes and prominent figures. But there are some out there like Dolphins wide receiver Mike Williams who didn't take too kindly to the news. Buckley says that he too had to deal with some people who were against him being gay.

"Well, I had backlash myself," Buckley said. "And what happens is … I used to get homophobic emails before I came out, people who knew I was gay. And if I received a homophobic email it would keep me up all night. I'd be horrified because, 'Oh my God, what's going to happen now?' Then you come out and you get 90, 91, 92 consecutive emails that are from gay people, straight people, saying, 'Hey, good for you, live your life,' and so forth. When you get that one email that's nasty or homophobic, it looks kind of silly upon reflection because having come out, homophobic emails to me are just so much noise and they're very silly and I don't respond. And I won't respond to what this guy says."
