With all the time spent stressing over the end of an era and the beginning of a rebuild here in Boston, a very important piece of Celtics history nearly slipped through the cracks. In fact, it would have if not for the heroic work of Twitter user @BoondyAlBoondy, who tweeted along the following tweet this afternoon.
Attention @rich_levine ... Today is the 20th anniversary of the Celtics signing Dino Radja!— Alessandro (@BoondyAlBoondy) July 3, 2013
And so it is.
Man, hard to believe it’s been 20 years, huh? Actually, it’s not. Feels more like 50 years since old No. 40 was rigidly working his way up and down the Celtics sidelines, draining elbow jumpers like lay ups and sucking down cigarettes like they were candy. Either way, Radja’s mystique lives on to this day. He’s remembered as one of the most entertaining characters from a wholly disappointing era of Celtics basketball.
And to celebrate the platinum anniversary of his signing, I dug up an old interview I did with Dino when he was visiting Boston back in 2009. It was for a podcast I was doing at the time called the Dino Radja Experience, and over the course of our conversation Dino touched on many amazing moments from his time with Celtics, including getting beaten up by Xavier McDaniel and the time he ditched his car in traffic to avoid being late to his NBA debut.
If you ignore my Chris Farley Show-like interview stylings, it’s a fun listen.
