BOSTON — In an ongoing effort to create more flexibility with both their roster and their salaries, the Celtics have waived Donte Greene.

Greene was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies on August 15 in exchange for fellow former Syracuse University player Fab Melo.

Melo has since been waived by the Grizzlies and will be in the Dallas Mavericks training camp.

Greene's contract, worth slightly more than $1 million, would have become guaranteed if he were on the C's roster at the start of the season.

The Celtics are rebuilding this season and have made it a priority to avoid being a repeat luxury tax offender. In order to do that, they must avoid being a luxury tax payer in at least two of the next three seasons.

In addition to saving money, the Celtics also prefer to keep at least one roster spot open -- they now have 14 players with guaranteed contracts, one short of the league-maximum -- heading into training camp.

According to the website Hoopshype.com, Greene is expected to sign with a team in China.

Because the Chinese Basketball Association's season ends sometime in February, that could potentially result in Greene returning to the NBA with the C's or another team looking to add some depth with an eye towards the postseason.

Having appeared in 253 NBA games, the 6-foot-11 forward has career NBA averages of 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds.
