Fab Melo grew up playing soccer in his native Juiz de Fora, Brazil. When he transitioned to basketball as a teenager, he was naturally drawn to Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. The attraction had nothing to do with the fact they are both big men. Like Melo, Olajuwon also played soccer and he admired his footwork.

This season, Melo will make another transition this time, to the NBA. The Celtics selected Melo out of Syracuse University with the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 draft. With a little more than five years of basketball experience, Melo acknowledges he still has a lot to learn. He is also eager to do so from his veteran teammates.

The rookie center sat down with at the Las Vegas Summer League to go Beyond the Arc, talking about his move to the United States, the keys to learning the Celtics defensive system, meeting Kevin Garnett for the first time, and missing his favorite meal of rice, beans, and fried eggs.
